Lesson 1 - Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 1 - Lessons in Positivity

Topics: 1. What is Positivity 2. Why Learn Positivity 3. Why Positivity Works.

Abstract: This lesson introduces aspects of positivity, how all we are affected, how and in what ways one benefits by practicing it and why positivity works.

Topic 1 : What is Positivity

Positivity is a human quality. It shows up as having a frame of mind that is :
  • positive
  • optimistic
  • constructive
  • motivating
  • self-esteem promoting
  • result oriented and
  • solution oriented
A person possessing this quality has a matching attitude toward self, others, situations, problems, difficulties, conditions and circumstances of life and challenges. It shows up in a variety of situations resulting from events, incidents, occurences and happenings. It also shows up when interactions and discussions go awry.

Topic 2 : Why Learn Positivity

The aim of learning positivity is to achieve the propositions listed in the previous topic and live a rewarding, achieving, stress-free, healthy life.

There is a certain connection between our psyche and mind, our mind and brain, and brain and body.

We may be affected from time to time for many varied reasons.
It is our psyche that usually influences our attitude, perceptions, evaluations, assessments, conclusions, quality of interactions, accompanying non-verbals in communication. It is the psyche that spins dreams to resolve our unresolved problems of the previous day and of life. Thus our mind operates in turn. It is the mind that gets our brain to process data in typical ways. The brain affects our body. How? One may ask. Our body is affected by the combinations of hormones that are released as a result of brain activity. The hormones determine the health and wellness of our mind and body both. Learning and Practicing Positivity establishes health to psyche, mind, brain, hormonal system and our body. We thus come to enjoy a happy state of mind, peaceful living, and a healthy body.

Learning and practicing Positivity rewards a peaceful base state. It is our abode of solace. It gives us a space to visit at call, whenever, wherever, in fact all the time. It gives us capacity to read our mind and thoughts in real time. It enables us to act sanely, safely, effectively and appropriately all the time. We learn to forgive too. Forgiving allows disturbing thoughts to pass through our mind's space without bothering, or disturbing, or unsettling us. Positivity rewards us good physical, mental, psychological, emotional and operational health. It enables us to live happily and enjoy a sense of achievement. We come to enjoy the best possible relationships in rewarding ways.

Topic 3 : Why Positivity Works
Positivity works because we successfully disengage from an operational mind almost a thousand times a day. We can and do change gears too, albeit effortlessly. The most important boon we use is that we work synergetically. We are able to and do access our collective human consciousness for good reason, unselfishly.

Summary : This lesson explains the  What, Why and How of Positivity. In time we make it a way of thinking, feeling, speaking, talking, and orienting ourselves to self, others, life, situations and problems of our life.

Lesson 12 - Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 12 - Lessons in Positivity

Abstract: Affirmation is a statement we use to tell the SCM something or a statement we use to get our SCM to listen to our need. We are seeing how to construct an affirmation. An affirmation converts to an assertion when we want to get something out of ourself.

Fundamental needs for effective communication.

1. Positivity

2. Self Worth

3. Forgiveness - Duster

4. Skills of Communication

5. Freedom from Handbrakes

Associated needs for effective communication to reach SCM

1. Relaxed

2. Sincere

3. Promoting Mood

4. Child like

5. Enthusiastically

6. As if completed

7. Being in Alpha State

8. Delivering to SCM

Affirmation

Affirmation is a statement. It confirms our stated thing in positive terms. An affirmation is strengthened when it is matched by our belief in it that it works. It is also strengthened by our self worth - that we are fit to receive. We have seen some things about the statements we make they are being repeated here for sake of clarity.

I am feeling hungry. I need to eat food.

I am feeling hungry. I want food to eat.

I am feeling hungry. I should be eating now.

I am hungry. I am eating food. - This is an affirmation and also an asserting statement. It is a good affirmation.

I want to / wish to / need  to / should be eating slowly.

I am eating my food at lunch slowly today. This is an affirmation and also an asserting statement. It is a good affirmation.

I am committing myself to eat food slowly. A very good affirmation.

I am committed to eat my food slowly, deliberately, attentively and exclusively. This is an excellent affirmation.

I am committed to eat my food slowly, deliberately, attentively and exclusively. Hey my mind please listen. I am giving you permission to be with me all the time while I am eating my food so that I achieve what I have decided. . . . . so that I achieve my decision. . . . . . . so that I achieve my decision and commitment. . . . . so that my decision is achieved. . . . . . so that my decision and commitment is achieved.

I need to / I hope I find a parking at Reliance Supermarket.

I am finding a parking on reaching Reliance Supermarket.

A parking is waiting for me as I reach Reliance Supermarket.

Oh! How will I clear this traffic jam.

I am clearing this traffic jam.

I am finding myself on the other side of this traffic jam soon.

This traffic jam is clearing for me to pass through safely.

All the help, assistance, consideration, cooperation comes to me easily.

I wish to / want to / need to / pass the exam.

I am passing the examination.

I am committed to passing the examination.

I need / want help.

Help is reaching me.

I want people to appreciate me.

Others are appreciating me.

I am appreciated. My work is appreciated. All I do receives appreciation all the time - instead of un-asked for - instead of without my asking.

Affirmation works on either-or principle. I need to keep away from interfering in the process. I need to believe it works. I need to be patient. I need to keep away from pushing / enquiring / expecting / anticipating.

Affirmation works because I am the master. SCM is at my service all the time.

Summary: We have seen what an affirmation is. Many examples are seen. Necessities are studied. Primary belief is learnt.

Lesson 13 - Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 13 - Lessons in Positivity

Abstract: Positivity messaging of SCM by using Affirmation works when we follow some conditions. There are seven prescribed conditions. We will be going through them in this lesson.

Fundamental needs for effective communication.

1. Positivity

2. Self Worth

3. Forgiveness - Duster

4. Skills of Communication

5. Freedom from Handbrakes

Associated needs for effective communication to reach SCM

1. Relaxed

2. Sincere

3. Promoting Mood

4. Child like

5. Enthusiastically

6. As if completed

7. Being in Alpha State

8. Delivering to SCM

Conditions for getting the affirmation planted in the SCM

It is true that the SCM is listening to what we say to ourselves and to others and acts on what we say on its own. An affirmation works for sure when we have learnt to talk correctly to ourselves and to others. When we are generally doing this then we find need for affirmation once in a while for a special purpose. It is in such times of need that we need to 'tell' the SCM to deliver what we want. We need to follow supporting conditions so that the affirmation gets planted.

We can start with addressing our mind. Hey my mind. Listen. (SCM is a part of our mind) I want you to act on what I am now proceediing to say. "The meaning of the word daily wages in hindi is coming to me." Now we need to follow some conditions so that it reaches the SCM for sure. Here are the conditions.

  1. Being Relaxed - It is possible that our need makes us stressed, anxious, eager, worried, confused, desiring strongly or any other. Knowing this we work on ourselves to be relaxed. This is done by sitting comfortably, breathing in and out 3 to ten times slowly keeping our eyes closed. We proceed to release the affirmation when we find we are comfortable and relaxed. 'Not to worry' is the formulation too.
  2. Being Sincere - Sincerity is displayed by being serious, modest and honest in what we are doing.
  3. Promoting Mood - A promoting mood is established by believing that the affirmation is already working for us.
  4. Being Child-like - Being child-like is perhaps the most important component of messaging. Why because a child believes in fantasies, fairy tales, stories, cartoons to be true and real. It even acts out some roles that characters play in them. They then become real. So messaging in Positivity also gets one to enter a fantasy world for a while.
  5. Being Enthusiastic - Enthusiasm means being energetic and committed to what we are saying. We proceed to examine what we have said and how we have said if we find that it doesn't work.
  6. Structuring Affirmation as if accomplished - See the change in sentence structure to know what as if accomplished means. I want to reach the station on time. Better to say - I am reaching the station on time. Still better to say - I see myself at the station at 10 am today.
  7. Planting when in Alpha State - Alpha state is one of four states of consciousness. We pass through this state just as we are falling asleep and also when we have just woken up. Alpha state is also available when we are drousy. We can become drousy at will through practice. Alpha state is also present when we are relaxed like when we are day dreaming. Also when we are resting by our mother. We can tap these moments to plant our affirmation

Summary: In this lesson we have read the explanation of the seven conditions that support planting of an affirmation.

Lesson 15. Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 15 - Lessons in Positivity

Abstract: This lesson deals with Creating Effective Affirmations

Jack Canfield is a motivational speaker. His book 'Success Principles' is a popular publication.

He has mentioned some nine guidelines for creating effective affirmations. I am repeating them with some modifications to fit my format of Positivity.

  • Start Affirmations with the words I am . . . . . Why? One may ask. Our SCM interprets this use as being a command.
  • Using the Present Continuous Tense or better still a Present Perfect Tense. I am reaching the station on time. Better: I am reaching the station at 10 am today. Still Better: I see myself at Pune Railway Station at 10 am.
  • Make the affirmation free of any negative word. Wrong: I am not afraid of driving.   Right: I am free of fear of driving. Right:  I am free of fear when driving.
  • Make the affirmation short. Like we count words when we advertise in classified ads in the newspaper, because each word costs money.
  • Account for time while delivering the affirmation. I would give a year when messaging to buy a flat / six months to buy a car / a month to buy jewellery / an extra 20 minutes to ask for a parking slot.
  • Make the affirmation specific. I am coming to own a new car. Making it specific : I am coming to own a new Red Honda City Car.
  • Make it executable by choosing correct words. I confidently deliver speeches / talks before a crowd. I am free of hesitation expressing myself.
  • Add a dynamic emotion. Some commonly used words are : joyfully, happily, proudly, calmly, confidently, delighted, enthusiastic, enthusiastically, coolly, serenely, triumphantly. I am confident that I will deliver the talk before students nicely.
  • Affirmations are made for self. They have to be intelligently worded when they are made for others. I see our maid Janaki coming on time to work.
  • Add something better when wanting. A nice roomy, well lit, well ventilated three bedroom, hall, kitchen flat with a balcony / terrace is coming to me in Andheri West or somewhere better.

Summary: We have seen ten ways to make effective affirmations.

Please recite these affirmations by generating the right mindset, mood and in alpha state.
All consideration, cooperation, help and assistance comes to me easily.
All things good come to me easily.

I happily enjoy all good things in life.

I get ideas about how to get over things that are difficult and challenging.

I am a blessed person.

Lesson 16 - Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 16 - Lessons in Positivity

Abstract - This lesson covers what ANTS means and how to avoid them.

All about ANTS - ANTS are Automatic Negative Thoughts

These ANTS ruin the things that you can get out of your life if only you consciously word your thoughts in positive terms.
We stomp ants or blow them away when they bother us when we are in some activity. Right? Similarly we make sure we either stop half way and get rid of these ANTS or replace them with positive affirming thoughts which is the same as blowing ANTS away.

Research claims that we talk to ourself some 50,000 times a day. That makes it 52 times a minute!  Too high na? I too am surprised. I think we may engage in mind talk some ten times a minute. Wonder how many times of those 10 times we are worried, angry, blaming, find fault, sad, anxious or bored.

Here are some ways in which we engage in ANTS

Always or never thinking
These thoughts are generated by adding an extra word like never, anyhow, always me or other similar.
My mother always bothers me with work when I am studying / reading / watching TV.
Why does my boss always tell me.
I never get to do what I want to do. Anyhow it does not matter now.

Asserting the lop side.
What will I do now?
Oh my God I am late.
Oh Shit!  What a mess I have made.

Predicting failure, loss, ridicule, punishment.
Oh! I forgot to fill this item. Now I will not get a call from the company.
I gave extra money to the shopkeeper. Why should he return it. Now I will have to bear the loss.

Mind Reading In mind reading we tend to decide what the other is thinking and conclude the outcome thereof. Only psychic people in California can read other peoples' minds or so the saying goes.
He isn't paying attention to me. Surely he will not do my work.
Nobody is coming to my table to take an order. The staff in this restaurant is carless.
There is no traffic on the road. I hope nothing is wrong with me or is a holiday today.

Using attributions. It is using some forcing words in speech which creates stress or hurrying up or compulsion. Some of the words that we use are must, should, need to, ought to, have to.
There is a lot of work. I must go to the office on time today.
I need to save enough money through this year to be able to travel next year.

Self Labelling Utterances. We tend to say things about ourself which become predictions.
I do not remember things these days. I am becoming forgetful.
He does not speak well. He must be basically an arrogant person.
She cannot understand what I am telling her. She's an idiot.
People in my office do not take work to heart. They are irresponsible.

Using attributions. It is using some forcing words in speech which creates stress or hurrying up or compulsion. Some of the words that we use are must, should, need to, ought to, have to.
There is a lot of work. I must go to the office on time today.
I need to save enough money through this year to be able to travel next year.
Labelling. In labelling we give a quality name to a person because of an observed behaviour
She doesn't understand what I tell her. Surely she's an idiot.
People in this office do not pour their heart into their work. They are irresponsible.
He doesn't know how to speak. He seems to be arrogant.

Personalising. In personalising we qualify ourself because of an experience or type of response.
I am not remembering numbers on one call. I am becoming forgetful.
The spoon has slipped out of my hand twice today. I have started becoming careless.
He doesn't know how to speak. He seems to be arrogant.
This friend hasn't called me yet. He seems to have lost interest in my proposal.
Life is not easy. I need to work hard.

Summary / Learning Points: We have seen many non performing statements that we frequently make that render our declarations ineffective if not outright ineffective if not harmful to our interests.

Lesson 17 - Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 17 - Lessons in positivity

Relevance to Positivity - This title line is being dropped from this lesson. I trust you have fallen in line with the Positivity Process.

Abstract -  We are going to do some exercises to start letting SCM do its job.

Exercise 1

Thoughts come to our mind about how we are, how others are, how our life is, how are we moving in your life. The exercise is to be executed taking time out every day in the morning. Be relaxed. Be free of any disturbance. Now imagine looking into a mirror.

First say three of these things three times :

I am good, good, good.
I am smart, smart, smart.
I am intelligent, intelligent, intelligent.

Others are good, good, good.
Others are nice, nice, nice.
Others are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

My life is good, good, good.
My life is nice, nice, nice.
My life is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

I am moving in the right direction in my life.  I am moving in the right direction in my life.  I am moving in the right direction in my life.

I am achieving my goals. I am achieving my goals, I am achieving my goals. I am achieving my goals.

I am achieving my goals. I achieve success. I achieve success. I achieve success.

Now recite these three from each three at a time every day. It should take three to five days to complete. You can move faster by doing in two sessions during a day. Once in the morning and once at night.
  1. About Self - Good, smart, intelligent, confident, capable, successful, good looking, impressive, achiever, quick learner, achiever, prosperous, well to do, rewarded, assisted, helped, supported, blessed, leader. I am born for a higher purpose. Things happen to me with ease. You can add some more to this list.
  2. About Others - Good, nice, wonderful, helping, helpful, assisting, cooperating, guiding, rewarding, accepting. You can add some more to this list.
  3. About Your Life - Good, nice, wonderful, easy, rewarding, convenient, beneficial, well to do, successful. You can add some more to this list.
  4. How you are moving in your life - In the right direction, achieving my goals, achieving success, achieving prosperity, achieving recognition, achieving status, achieving prominence, achieving leadership,  achieving well to do status, being well rounded. You can add some more to this list.

Lesson 19 - Lessons in Positivity

Lesson 19 - Lessons in Positivity

You need to carefully read and understand this lesson. It will come handy to treat many mind and body related issues including relationships. I think you should take a week to read it once a day on five day and do all the prescribed exercises.

We use the word self mainly in these contexts.
  1. I, myself.
  2. We, ourselves.
  3. You, yourself.
  4. You, yourselves.
  5. He, she, it, himself, herself, itself.
  6. They, themselves.
What does the word self mean? Self means our existence. It becomes experienced or known when we think, reflect or introspect about ourselves and / or other/s. Now what does the word selfhood mean? Selfhood means the qualities that set individuals or groups of people apart from others. This creates individual identity and asserts our existence as persons. Self therefore indicates in body, mind and soul. This self has two components one is the I, and the other, the me. The I is the one that is affected, and me is the one that experiences. Therefore, it is the I that experiences joy, sad, pain, sadness, fear, anxiety, distress and other feelings / emotions. It is the I that is well or unwell. It is the I that is motivated or unmotivated, brave and strong or fearful and weak, that can or cannot. It is the I that experiences being insulted, ignored, hurt, pained, injured, cornered, isolated, embarrassed, guilty, exploited, wronged, harassed, used, habituated, addicted and in many more things. We need to remember that I can be an individual or a group of individuals. The group can be a family, religious, community, linguistic, racial, national, employee, professional, occupational, political or work or other group. They too have an I, that experiences right and wrong. One may wonder what has this got to do with Positivity. Actually a lot. Why? Because it concerns our well being. Me experiences the effect. I experiences it in terms of  feeling, emotion, thinking or opinion. Self is affect in mind, body and soul. There is a direct correspondence between our level of well being and the condition of our body. Of course, we have been provided with a level of stress which we can tolerate. This stress has a threshold. It reflects in many ways once the threshold is crossed. Many of the bodily ailments are caused because of our eating habits. Many more are caused by the thoughts, opinions, feelings and emotions that we deliberately hold from expressing. Here is a table to fill as an exercise.

No.

Feeling / Emotion

What do I do with it

 Angry

 2

 Sad

 3

 Pained

 4

 Embarrassed

We experience six principal feelings - joy, sad, angry, fearful, surprise and disgust. Related to these six feelings are related emotions. Put together they form a wheel or circle of emotions. Here is a picture of the same.
You can choose from there to fill in the table.

Let us take a look how the affect is handled by us.

No.

Fill this table to know which are the feelings that we fail to express or discard. The same goes for our thoughts and opinions that we fail to express or discard. We usually use the You to express our feeling or thought or opinion. There is a safe method to use I instead. These are the steps to do it.

  1. Report the observation - We have entered into an argument. / I observe our voices are raised.
  2. Report the own feeling - I feel angry. / It points to I being angry.
  3. Report the need - I wish that we speak some other topic. / Let us bring down our voices.
  4. Make a request - Shall we then speak some other topic. / Let us bring down our voice.
I asked to go out this Sunday. I heard you say we can go some other day. I feel sad and angry listening to this. My need is to go out. Either you take me or let me go out with my friends. I prefer I go out with you. Will you please therefore accompany me or take me out.

What happens when we do not do this? Our mood, attitude, opinion, emotion are affected. When psyche (memory cache) is affected mind is affected. When brain is affected body is affected. There is a subtle connection between mind and brain. So, when mind is affected, brain is affected. The body is affected in many ways. These affects show up as ailments. They are very nicely explained in a book by Julie Hay titled Heal Your Body. Link to Heal your Body by Julie Hay Not only that , feelings related to ailment are mentioned. The affirmations for the same is also mentioned in the book.  You can download it to your computer from my dropbox using this link. Ask me for help on WhatsApp if there is a need.

Now coming to Positivity. Feelings, emotions, thinking, opinion not expressed or communicated hurts both mind and body and thereby our well being. Positivity affords us many methods. They are given here.
  1. Use the four step method given above.
  2. Write a letter and post it into a postal letter box with a name but no address.
  3. Do the let-go exercise.
  4. Deal with the role modelling as suggested in a previous lesson.
  5. Install happiness as base state of mind by doing five things given below.
  6. Recite wonderful - recitation is given as attachment.
  7. Recite this commitment every morning - I am committed to be happy and joyful under all conditions and circumstances of life.
Five things to do to remain happy in life
  1. Engage in outdoor physical exercise / activity for forty minutes.
  2. Engage in a goal oriented activity.
  3. Learn something new and share it with many others.
  4. Be of help or assist another.
  5. Hug another, exchange fives, say something nice to another many times a day.
Summary: In this lesson we have seen the distinction between self, I and me. Then we have seen the many feelings and emotions that we experience. We have seen how feelings and emotions affect our body and mind. We have seen how these affects cause ailments and diseases in addition to causing change in our view of ourself of others, our life, our quality of living, or health among many other. We have also seen how to deal with these affects.
